Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

Kamakura, Japan, Noemí Galera, Taller de Fotos

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the most important shrine in Kamakura. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi, the first shogun of the Kamakura government, in 1063.

The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and the samurai in general.

Here we see the lower sanctuary. The main room (or Hongu Jogu) is located on a terrace on top of a wide staircase. The main hall has a museum that displays various treasures of the Hermitage property, such as swords, masks and documents.
